Cosmic Conversations: Jeanette Getrost

Jeanette is an artist working across a variety of mediums—painting, illustrating, directing—and she loves to compose on the piano, design and sew, and write.

Essentially, she’s driven by a need to express herself creatively in whatever form feels right at the moment.

On a more personal level, she’s a seeker, endlessly curious about the mysteries of life, always exploring deeper meanings and connections beyond what’s immediately visible.

How do astrology / tarot / esoteric arts play a role in your life?

I once heard someone say that the stars probably dictate more than we’d like to believe and that resonated. I don’t know as much about astrology as I’d like to, but the deeper my relationship to nature becomes the more attuned I feel to what’s going on above. I am more aware of how intuitive life choices always seem to align with what’s going on astrologically. Moon phases and eclipses specifically—it’s kind of comical at times. I’m like ok who or what is actually in control here.

I feel pretty connected to tarot and have been conducting readings for myself and friends for several years. It’s one of my favorite tools for strengthening my trust and relationship with my guides. Oftentimes I’ll pull for myself and go “No I don’t want that card.” So I shuffle and will pull it again. I’m like, “Ok ok I’ll surrender.”

What limiting beliefs / blocks have you worked through to get where you are today? Where do you still want to go?

I think a general sense of deservingness, or that it’s somehow selfish to live a joyful life. I’ve come a long way in recent years of really trusting myself, and not feeling the need to conform, but there’s still a bit of those old beliefs that linger. There is a deeper, hidden truth that I would like to bring to light through my artistic practice.

Why do you think creative exploration and expansion are important in today’s world?

Life has meaning and it’s a gift when we find it. For me, meaning is usually found through the process of creating, and/or I will catch a glimpse of meaning, or purpose, and it inspires me to create. It’s really symbiotic. I also feel creativity is simply what we all came here to do. I’ve adopted the belief that everyone is unique and nobody is special, and it’s up to every individual to carve out their own unique path. In that way, creativity is symbolical evidence that the universe is in fact limitless and abundant. Creativity is also so much about the process. Even when one creates a so-called masterpiece, I don’t think we ever truly we feel that we have arrived—it is all a reflection of life and a reminder that there is not some future destination we need to get to—it’s all happening now. I have already, and could continue, to go on and on, but that’s why poetry exists, or song, or painting.

What’s your approach to natural wine? Why do you love it? Do you have any rituals?

I’m pretty passionate about what I consume being as natural as possible. My diet is mostly plant based these days because I love how it makes me feel. I am especially cautious about sugar intake after I really began to notice how it was manifesting in my body—from breakouts, to breakdowns.

Natural wine is naturally an extension of that. I also don’t like consuming alcohol other than wine. I did recently and was quickly reminded of why I don’t like it.

I don’t have any rituals per se, but I’m living nomadically at the moment so when I do feel like having wine, I’ll search for natural wine shops, or restaurants as a way of getting to know where I am staying.

How do you nurture balance in your life? Any tips / tricks on how to enjoy yourself and stay grounded?

I know what works for me and that involves being in nature, long walks, alone time, meditating and being conscious of what I consume through food and media. I mostly live this way so when there are times of indulgence I just let myself have it knowing it might take a few days to get back to homeostasis.

What’s filling your cup this season?

a mini French press that I slowly drink for several hours in the morning, and a dry pet nat feels festive for ushering in the fall. Figuratively, my cup is being filled by simplifying my artistic practice—currently it’s daily drawings with pencil on paper

Who and what is inspiring you right now?

I am anticipating the fall season. It is the time of year where I feel most inspired and alive. All of my childhood interests are still prevalent and really come to play at this time, and that is all things Victoriana, shorter days, which means I get to light candles in the afternoon, and films and books with a hint of dark or esoteric undertones.

Dream dinner party guests – dead or alive.

Alejandro Jodorowsky, W. Somerset Maugham, Leonora Carrington, Agnes Pelton, Ram Dass, Joseph Campbell, David Lynch, Mary Shelley, Vashti Bunyan, my dad.  Would probably need to make this a weekend long event.

Where’s your happy place?

Antique shops, a cozy little cafe, and just get me close to trees and creeks.

What’s the best advice you’d give your younger self?

Follow your bliss
